Ancona Airport Departures (AOI)

Ancona Airport is located in the Marche region of central Italy, approximately 18 km from the city of Ancona, and also nearby many other towns and major cities of interest. The airport is not the largest in Italy, and is, in fact, one of Italy’s smaller airports, handling around 500,000 passengers per year, whereas many other airports handle millions per year. However, Ancona is considered to be an important gateway to central Italy, and is strategically located halfway down the Italian Adriatic coast. Passengers departing from Ancona will find all the facilities they require within the terminal building.

Various airline companies serve the airport of Ancona. The most important airline carrier, with the greatest number of destinations, is Ryanair. Ryanair is a low-cost airline company that has become extremely popular at many Italian airports, as well as at some of London’s airports, such as London-Gatwick and London-Stansted. Ryanair therefore serves many of the major Italian cities, as well as further afield destinations, through their long-haul flights. Some of Ryanair’s destinations from Ancona Airport include Alghero, on the island of Sardinia, Brussels South-Charleroi, London-Stansted, Madrid, Seville, Trapani and Weeze.

Alitalia also offers frequent flights to Rome Fiumicino, and Belle Air, operated by Belle Air Europe, serves the destinations of Milan-Orio al Serio, Pristina and Tirana. Carpatair is present with flights to Timisoara, and Lufthansa Regional, operated by Air Dolomiti flies to Munich. Seasonal flights to Sharm el-Sheikh are available from Meridiana, which is operated by Eurofly.

Passengers can travel to the airport in their own vehicles, as there are adequate parking facilities nearby the terminal building, and spaces for long and short-term parking periods, or passengers can travel by bus, train or taxi. Although Ancona is smaller than most airports, it has its own railway station directly opposite the air terminal. Trains run frequently between this station and the main Ancona Centrale Railway Station in the city. Buses are also frequently available from Ancona for transport to the airport. These buses are run by the Conero Bus Company, and travel a variety of routes. The Finalmente Tours Company offers a bus service from Ascoli Piceno to the airport, approximately six times a day. Many passengers simply take a taxi to the airport, as this is a very quick and convenient service. Taxis are however always more expensive than buses, as they offer a private service, and can collect you from the doorstep of your residence, hotel or place of business.

Always leave sufficient time for finding parking, checking-in hold luggage and passing through the security control procedures at Ancona Airport. If you are driving your own car, make sure you allow time for possible traffic congestion as well, or time to effectively return your hired vehicle to the relevant car hire company. Check-in services usually open about two hours before an international flight is scheduled to depart, and about an hour before a domestic flight’s departure. Check-in will close 45 minutes before an international departure, and approximately 20 minutes before a domestic departure flight. Ensure that all your baggage is clearly labelled, with your name, surname and address, and that it does not exceed your airline company’s maximum baggage allowances. Usually, two items of hold luggage is permitted per person, and each item not weighing more than 20 kg. If your baggage is too heavy, you have a choice of leaving less important objects at the left luggage office, or paying an excess baggage charge at the office for your airline company. Details of baggage allowances are usually written on the back of your airline ticket, or you can contact your airline company with any further enquiries.

Ancona Airport consists of a single terminal building which is divided into an arrivals area and a departures lounge. It is an airport that is very easy to find your way around, and all its facilities are clearly indicated. The building is now very modern and well organized, as it was completed renovated in 2004. It was also expanded during this time to allow more space for the expected increase in passenger traffic in the years to come. Facilities include the full service bank of Banca Marche, currency exchange services and ATMs. A pharmacy is available, as well as a Lost and Found office and basic first aid services.

Business travellers can enjoy the tranquil environment at a VIP lounge. This reserved waiting lounge offers Television and TV text, electricity sockets for PC usage, Internet connections and magazines. It offers the perfect surroundings in which to relax or in which to get some work done. Passengers can browse the few shops at the airport if there is time to spare, such as the Wine Shop Essentia, which sells local specialties, a duty free shop and a shop selling sunglasses. A self-service restaurant is available, and a couple of snack bars.

The airport is completely accessible for disabled passengers, with ramps, lifts, reserved parking spaces and adequate toilet facilities. Further assistance can be arranged with your airline company. More information can be found online, at www.ancona-airport.com.
