Bergamo Airport Arrivals (BGY)
Bergamo Airport handles more than seven million passengers per year, and is one of the most important airports of Milan. It serves as part of the Milan airport system, together with Linate and Milan Malpensa. The airport is also commonly referred to as Milan Orio al Serio, and is located only 5 km from Bergamo and 45 km from Milan. It is the fourth busiest airport in Italy. Many of the passengers arriving at Bergamo are tourists, who are coming to see the extraordinary sights and attractions in the nearby vicinity. This area is considered to be one of the most interesting tourist locations in Northern Italy, featuring lakes, mountains, shopping centers and cities of art, amongst many other attractions.
The airport has a single terminal building which handles all departures and arrivals of international and domestic flights. It is a modern and well-equipped terminal, with banking facilities provided by the Banca Popolare Di Bergamo S.p.A. and the Credito Bergamasco, as well as separate ATMs for smaller banking transactions. The money broker of Maccorp Italiana S.p.A. provides currency exchange services, as well as the purchase of traveler’s checks, pre-paid phone cards and top-up cards. A pharmacy is situated within the airport, and a church for religious passengers is open all day in the arrivals area.
There are many shopping outlets available at Bergamo, which sell all kinds of items ranging from cosmetics and jewelry to newspapers and tobacco. There is also a shop which sells clothing and gift items. Restaurants which can be enjoyed at the airport include MyChef, Servair Air Chef, Autogrill (providing an Italian style snack bar), Agripromo Bergamo (selling typical Bergamo food), and the Juice Bar, with all kinds of appetizing and healthy snacks like yoghurts, fruit salad, smoothies and natural breakfasts. The airport also features a VIP lounge called the Orio al Serio VIP Lounge, which has a relaxing atmosphere and provides various services for business passengers.
Orio al Serio Airport welcomes disabled or reduced mobility passengers. There is even a dedicated lounge for these passengers, the Sala Amica Lounge, where staff can provide additional assistance. Passengers who require special assistance when arriving at Bergamo Airport should arrange this service with their airline company when booking their flight ticket. The staff of the airline company will then inform the airport of your specific requirements, and ensure that there is someone to greet you on your arrival at the airport. Assistance will be offered for the processes of baggage collection and customs, and up until the time you are ready to leave the airport. The airport is equipped with pavement ramps, disabled toilet facilities, lifts for easy movement between floors, and special lifting equipment for boarding and disembarking from the aircraft. There are also preferential routes for visually impaired individuals.
There are a few transportation options when leaving Bergamo Airport. Of course, if you have your own vehicle, you can pay for your parking at the manned pay station or the automatic pay station at the arrivals area. The airport is connected to Bergamo and other surrounding areas by the A4 Milan-Venice motorway. Passengers will also find a good selection of car hire companies at the airport, including Hertz, Sixt, Alamo, Avis, Budget, National, Easycar and Europcar, which all offer a wide range of quality vehicles at competitive prices. Driving your own hired vehicle is a wonderful way to explore the sights and attractions of the nearby areas. If you are continuing your journey by train, there are three bus services which provide transport to the main railway stations. ATB Buses travel to Bergamo Railway Station, Autostradale links the airport to Milan Central Station, Milan Lambrate Station and Brescia CIBA Station, while the Orioshuttle is a direct link to Milan Central Railway Station as well. There is no actual railway station on site Taxis are readily available from outside the arrivals area, and provide transportation to any nearby destination.
Orio al Serio Airport does not have any hotels on its grounds, but there are a few hotels in the nearby vicinity. The Starhotels Cristallo Palace has a rating of three stars, and is only 1.5 miles away from the airport. Another nearby hotel is the Hotel Piemontese, which is also rated as three stars, and is 2.1 miles from the airport. Many hotels provide transport by hotel shuttles to and from the airport. This is often a complementary service for their guests. Find out from your hotel if they provide this service in advance of your trip to the airport, as a place on the shuttles usually needs to be reserved.
There are information desks within the terminal building for all general enquiries, as well as the Touristic Office (Bergamo Tourism), which can provide extra information about attractions and sights in the area. Staff at this office also provides hotel booking services. The Touristic Office is open every day of the week, from 08:00 to 23:00.
