Trains to and from Bergamo Airport (BGY)
Bergamo Airport is situated approximately 5 km from Bergamo and 45 km from Milan, in Northern Italy. It is also well-known as Orio al Serio Airport, and handles international and domestic flights to and from many destinations. Although there is no actual train station at the airport, passengers arriving by train, or passengers who would like to continue their journey by train, will find the bus services traveling between the airport and the train stations to be very convenient and cost-effective.
The airport is directly linked by bus to three main railway stations. The nearest one is Bergamo Railway Station, while the other two are in Milan (Milan Central Railway Station and Milan Lambrate Railway Station). These railway stations are connected to the airport by three bus companies, which are ATB, Autostradale and Orioshuttle.
The buses of ATB travel to the nearby Bergamo Railway station and the Upper Town area of Bergamo. They are available from the airport approximately every half an hour between the hours of 05:18 and 00:00. Passengers arriving at Bergamo Airport can purchase tickets for the ATB buses from the Autostradale desk or the Turismo Bergamo desk in the arrivals area of the terminal building, or from a ticket machine at the bus stop area. Passengers traveling to the airport can purchase tickets from newsagent outlets at the station, from machines at the Airport Bus stop area, or from the Bus Station ticket office.
ATB bus tickets are available at various prices, depending on the length of time for which they are valid after stamping. Tickets can be purchased for 90 minutes, 24 hours or 72 hours, and they include the cost of luggage transportation.
Passengers who would like to reach Orio al Serio Airport from Milan Central Station can use the services of Autostradale or the Orioshuttle. The Orioshuttle is a direct bus service between these two locations, and does not have any additional stops along the way. Buses are available between the hours of 04:00 and 23:15. Bus tickets are available from various outlets, including the internet, on the buses themselves, the ticket office within the airport terminal, or from Orioshuttle personnel nearby the bus stops. At Milan Railway Station, bus tickets are available from many of the retail outlets at the station as well.
Buses from the company of Autostradale travel to Milan Railway station as well, and these buses are available approximately every 30 minutes. Traveling time is about one hour.
Autostradale also provides bus services between Orio al Serio Airport and the other two railway stations, Milan Lambrate Railway Station and the Brescia CIBA Station. Buses are available at Milan Lambrate Station between 06:00 and 09:45, 12:45 and 16:00, and between 19:30 and 23:20. Autostradale buses depart from the CIBA bus terminal nearby the Brescia train station at 04:10, 06:15, 09:45, 11:20, 14:00, 16:30 and 19:30. From Bergamo Airport, the buses depart for Brescia at 05:10, 08:30, 11:15, 12:30, 16:20, 18:00 and 22:30.
By rail is a very popular way to travel in Italy, and many tourists prefer to use the train services than drive their own vehicle. Traveling by train is very cost-effective and fast, and not to mention fun as well! Tourists and visitors can choose between a variety of railway passes, depending on their age and travel requirements. The Trenitalia Pass is available in three different versions, and generally allows for first or second class travel on all the Trenitalia trains in Italy. These passes are valid for four to ten consecutive days of travel, or non-consecutive days, and should be used within a time period of two months.
The Trenitalia Pass is available for adult passengers, and their children will benefit from a 50% reduction in ticket costs. Younger travelers can save money with the Trenitalia Youth Pass. This pass allows for second class travel, and is especially for passengers between the ages of twelve and twenty-five. Thirdly, friends traveling together can make use of the Trenitalia Pass Saver, which is especially for small groups of two to five people.
Although having a train ticket or rail pass will enable you to get onto most trains, it is always advisable to make a reservation. Reservations can be made at the train station on the day you will be traveling, or even up to two months in advance of the train service that you will require. Certain trains always require a reservation, and these include most high-speed trains, night trains, hotel trains and other special service trains. Always ensure that you are in good time for your train’s departure. Trains in Italy are extremely punctual, and run on a tight schedule. When boarding the train, ensure as well that you get into the correct train car, as some trains will split during the journey, with half of the train heading to one destination, and the other half heading to another.
Passengers arriving at Bergamo can find out more information about the train services in Italy at www.trenitalia.com, or use their call center number at 892021. There are also information desks available within the airport terminal building.
