Trains to and from Cagliari Airport (CAG)

Cagliari Airport is well connected to highways and motorways, bus routes and the train station in Cagliari. There is no actual train station on the airport site, but the main railway station of Trenitalia in Cagliari can be easily reached by bus. The airport is only 7 km away from Cagliari, and therefore a bus trip to the train station is only a ten minute journey. This is an international airport, handling more than three million passengers per year, and is situated in Elmas, hence its second popular name of Cagliari-Elmas Airport. Elmas is on the island of Sardinia, in Italy.

The buses traveling between the airport and the train station are operated by ARST Azienda Regionale Trasporti. This company has two contact telephone numbers which can be used for enquiries. Their toll free number is 800 865042, and their other number is 070 4098327. They also have a website link from Cagliari Airport’s official website, at http://www.cagliariairport.it/en/.

Buses are available at Cagliari Airport from 08:40 to 23:30, and there are bus stops in front of the terminal’s Arrival and Departure areas. A bus departs from the airport approximately every half an hour. Passengers must purchase their bus tickets from the Newsstand/Bookstore at the airport, before boarding the bus, as no tickets are available on the bus itself.

The train station in Cagliari is located on Piazza Matteotti, and this is alongside the ARST Bus Station. Passengers arriving by train who wish to travel to the airport must take the ARST bus to the airport. From the bus station, the first bus leaves at 05:20, and the last bus departs for the airport at 22:30. All buses travel to the airport from Platform 8, and bus tickets can be purchased from the MacDonald’s next to the bus station.

The train station at Piazza Matteotti is the main Trenitalia Railway Station in Cagliari, and passengers can travel from here to Iglesias and Carbonia in the southwest. Iglesias is about an hour and a half’s journey from Cagliari, while Carbonia is an hour and fifteen minutes away. The mainline from the railway station travels to the north, as far as Sassari and Porto Torres. There are stops along the way at the towns of Oristano and Macomer. Cagliari is also connected to Arbatax in the south and Palau in the north. The journey by train from Macomer to Bosa Marina is a lovely ride, as the train passes through some spectacular Sardinian landscape until it nears the coast on the west of the island.

The second train station in Cagliari is the Ferrovie della Sardegna, or Sardinian Railway Station. This station is situated in Piazza Repubblica. From this station, passengers can travel north to Dolianova, Mandas and Isili. The main line from Cagliari runs to Chillivani, and it eventually divides in two, with one line heading towards Olbia and Golfo Aranci, and the other traveling to Sassari and Porto Torres.

Italy is well know for its extensive railway network operated by Trenitalia, and traveling by train is popular amongst tourists and locals. It is generally affordable as well, not to mention fairly fast, convenient and fun. Trenitalia offers tourists various railway passes which help to cut the costs of traveling, and these passes are only offered to foreign travelers. There are three versions of the Trenitalia Pass available, depending on your age and requirements, and they generally allow for first or second class travel on all the Trenitalia trains in Italy.

The Trenitalia Pass is available for adult passengers, and their children will benefit from a 50% reduction in ticket costs. Younger travelers can save money with the Trenitalia Youth Pass. This pass allows for second class travel, and is especially for passengers between the ages of twelve and twenty-five. Thirdly, friends traveling together can make use of the Trenitalia Pass Saver, which is intended for small groups of two to five people.

Passengers arriving at Cagliari can find out more about the train services offered by Trenitalia from their website, at www.trenitalia.com.
