Catania Airport Departures (CTA)

Catania-Fontanarossa Airport consists of a double storey, single terminal building, which handles all domestic and international flights. The airport is situated only a few miles from the city of Catania, and is well connected by the motorways of A19 and E45. Many different airline companies operate to and from Catania. Some of the popular airlines here are Alitalia, Air France, British Airways, easyJet, Lufthansa, AirOne, Air Berlin and Air Malta.

There are four ticket counters at the airport. The SAC Ticket Counter is open from 05:30 to 22:00, Alitalia from 05:30 to 20:30, Meridiana from 05:30 to 22:00, and the Wind Jet Ticket Counter from 05:30 to 19:30. Catania Airport’s terminal building has recently been completely renovated and modernized, and now includes a huge shopping area of 1400 square meters. There are also many superb restaurants and bars available, including a self-service restaurant in the Departure Terminal, a Coffee Bar and a another restaurant at the top of tower, with spectacular views of the airport activities. Banking facilities are available at the airport, as well as the Alitalia Bellini VIP Lounge, offering business equipment and services, and a conference room for all corporate flyers. A Post Office is situated in the Arrivals area.

Mothers and their babies are welcomed at Catania Airport, as there are modern and comfortable changing tables and other facilities in the Ladies’ toilets of the Departure Terminal. An expectant mother will require a medical certificate indicating that she is alright to fly if she has a risky pregnancy, is expecting twins or if she is in the last four weeks of her pregnancy. Should the baby decide to arrive during the flight, the Head of the Cabin Crew will determine if there is a doctor available on the airplane. The captain may decide to land if there is no doctor present, but should this not be possible, the cabin crew are equipped to deal with any medical emergency, including child-birth. Children from the age of two will have their own seat on the airplane.

Disabled passengers who are designated for departure will have plenty of assistance from SAC PRM Assistance at Catania Airport. No passenger may be refused entry to the flight due to a disability, therefore, special attention is reserved for PRM – Passengers with Reduced Mobility. SAC staff will offer assistance with baggage check-in procedures and security processes. A special bus will then collect the passenger at the gate to assist with boarding operations. This bus is called an ambulift, and is equipped with wheelchair lifts.

Animals are allowed to be transported on aircraft. Smaller animals, in an adequate pet basket/holder, may be transported within the cabin, but larger animals must be kept in the hold, and in an adequate carrier as well. Bookings for animals should be made in advance, and there may be a charge for their flight as well. Guide dogs may travel for free, and may also travel in the cabin if space allows, provided they wear a muzzle and are kept on a leash.

The amount of baggage that may be transported per person in the hold is determined by each different airline company. The maximum weight of the luggage and the supplementary costs for excess baggage is indicated on the airline ticket. Items that are allowed in the cabin include one hand baggage (smaller than 115cm) , one bag, document holder, or notebook computer, an overcoat or raincoat, reading material, a baby stroller and baby food, an umbrella or walking stick, items purchased in airport retail shops and a camera, video camera or CD player.

Passengers departing from Catania Airport are expected to arrive in good time for their flight. Allow sufficient time to find parking, check-in hold baggage and pass the security procedures. Your travel agent or airline can inform you of the time that you should arrive at the check-in desk before your departure. Passengers should cooperate fully with the security checks in order to not cause delays to other passengers. You will be required to place objects such as mobile phones, jewelry, calculators, keys etc in containers for security screening, and you may be required to remove your shoes before walking through the metal detector. It is possible that your hand luggage may also need to be searched. Have patience, and remember that these security measures are put in place to protect you and your family during the flight.
